Gnash para OS/2 y eComStation: GNU Flash Movie Player

From: Paul smedley <paulDESPAM@DESPAMsmedley.info>

Hi All,

I've updated the OS/2 & eComStation build of Gnash at my website at
http://os2ports.smedley.info to reflect the latest cvs code as at 2007-07-13.

For those that don't know what Gnash is, from http://www.gnu.org/software/gnash

Gnash is a GNU Flash movie player. Previously, it was only possible to play flash movies with proprietary software. While there are some other free flash players, none support anything beyond SWF v4. Gnash is based on GameSWF, and supports many SWF v7 features.

A plugin for Firefox is also planned when time permits.

The OS/2 port of Gnash is the subject of an OS/2 World Bounty - see   http://www.os2world.com/content/view/14712/1/ for more details.

Enjoy!

Paul.

Runs standalone
Gnash can run standalone to play flash movies.
Browser plugin
Gnash can also run as a plugin from within most Mozilla derived browsers, such as Firefox. Gnash also has support for Konqueror.
SWF v7+ compliant
Gnash can play many current flash movies.
Streaming Video
Gnash supports the viewing of streaming video from popular video sharing sites like Lulu.tv or YouTube.com.
XML Message server
Gnash also supports an XML based message system as documented in the Flash Format specification.
High Quality Output
Gnash uses OpenGL for rendering the graphics on the desktop, and AntiGrain (AGG) for embedded framebuffer only devices.
Free Software
Gnash is 100% free software. For more information on the GPL, go to the Free Software Foundation web site.
Better Security
Gnash pays extra attention to all network connections, and allows the user to control access.
Extensable
Gnash supports extending ActionScript by creating your own. You can write wrappers for any development library, and import them into the player.

Net: eCS-OS/2 Assembly Language list

From: Dale Erwin <daleDESPAM@DESPAMcasaerwin.org>

Not too many people these days are very keen on Assembly Language as a
viable development tool. When I was a mainframe programmer, specializing
in 370 Assembler, I heard all the same arguments against it about how much
more productive one could be in a high level language, but I never agreed
with them.

Don't you think anyone who could deliver a product that occupies 60MB as
compared to an equivalent product developed in a high level language that
occupies 600 MB, and in addition executed everything much faster that the
bloated app, could be competitive? How many times have I heard people
complain about how slow OOo and Mozilla apps are?

I have created a new yahoo group for anyone who wants to collaborate on the
problems of programming in Assembly Language under eCS and OS/2. I hope
that anyone interested in learning to program in Assembly Language will
join me in this group. It would also be greatly appreciated if anyone who
has any experience in it would also join us to give us some insight. It's
open to anyone who wants to join:

SW: Iconomize v0.80 & FPos v0.8

From: Rich Walsh <rwsDESPAM@DESPAMe-vertise.com>

New versions of my ini maintenance utilities, Iconomize and FPos (v0.80)
are now available. Both are maintenance updates that take advantage of the
improved stability and reliability provided by the latest release of Remote
Workplace Server, RWS08.

FPos
----
Have you ever wondered why checkini reports "folder position for non-folder
object"? Have you ever wondered what all those entries under
PM_Workplace:FolderPos were for? FPos answers these questions. Once you
know what theu do, you'll probably want to delete most of them. Using FPos
to clean up this entry can reduce the size of your os2.ini quite considerably.

Iconomize
---------
This unique tool lets you eliminate the single largest source of bloat in
os2.ini: duplicate icon data. If you haven't used it before, running
Iconomize just once can reduce the size of your os2.ini anywhere from 10%
to 25%.

You can get these freeware utils from hobbes:

FileManager/2 (FM/2)

From: David Graser <dwgrasDESPAM@DESPAMswbell.net>

// The utilities aren't included in this package. If you installed version 3.5.9 with the utilities, it is not necessary to install them again. If you don't have the utilities installed, download 3.5.9 from Hobbes and extract the utilities wpi and put it in the same directory as your 3.6.0 build and run the 3.6.0 install. It will then give you the option of installing the utilities along with build 3.6.0.

If you are a programmer and always wanted a feature added, but did not have the build environment, this should no longer be the case since the source now builds with Open Watcom. Source files can be obtained from
http://svn.netlabs.org/fm2

Enjoy!

Disonibildad inmediata de eComStation 2.0 RC1

From: Joachim Benjamins <joachimDESPAM@DESPAMmensys.nl>

Serenity Systems International and Mensys BV are pleased to announce the
immediate availability of eComStation 2.0 RC1.

This release is available to customers with an active Software
Subscriptions Services subcription.

More details can be found at http://www.ecomstation.com/subscription/

BACKUP

As always, the following applies:

!!! WHEN TESTING BETA SOFTWARE, ALWAYS BE SURE TO HAVE A TRIED AND TESTED
BACKUP OF YOUR SYSTEM !!!

Disk Resizer GUI

This beta has a custom DFSee engine that enables reliable RESIZING of FAT32 and NTFS filesystems to allow shrinking an existing Windows installation to make room for eComStation on the same system.

The GUI to this tool has been updated and is now using a graphical interface. To invoke it, please select 'Paritition Resizing Tool' from the Installation Volume Manager which can be called during installation.

GenMac support

This package provides generic driver support for several network interface cards under OS/2 and eComStation. Moreover, Genmac is enabled to support WPA encryption with the Wireless LAN Monitor 3.x or better.

// Genmac and the Wireless LAN monitor will be installed when the appropriate hardware is detected by the installer. If it is not detected, you can manually select the driver in the network installation dialog.

Bootable JFS

This release of eComStation contains the option to install the operating system on a JFS volume. The advantage of doing this is that the amount of diskcache is only limited by system memory (typically 10% of available memory is assigned) This increased cache size gives a huge gain in overall system performance.

To install onto a Bootable JFS volume, you will have to select 'JFS' as filesystem type in the 'Format Volume' page of the installer.

ACPI 2.22

ACPI support has been updated to the latest available version (2.22) which results in varying successrate. For example, AMD Opteron multicore CPU is  now reported to be supported.

Installation of ACPI has been improved by the use of the ACPI Wizard, which tries to determine system configuration and set parameters accordingly. You can manually change them of course. It will be run after regular installation has completed.

multicore CPU support

This beta supports the installation of eComStation on a MultiCore CPU computer. This includes Intel Core Duo, Core2 Duo and AMD 64 X2.

To enable it, you can do so in the ACPI Wizard that is launched from the Post Installation tasks at the end of the installation. Alternatively you can start the ACPI Wizard at any time from the install/remove folder in the Local System folder on the desktop.

eComStation Virtual File System (Samba client support)

Samba is a SMB/CIFS protocols file and print sharing server/client set originally made for UNIX world to cooperate with corresponding Windows and  OS/2 servers or clients. eComStation has a native implementation of SMB/CIFS server/client set - IBM LAN Manager and IBM Peer. These products have not been recently updated and may have some compatibility issues with modern Windows SMB/CIFS implementations. //

Serenity Systems International has reached an agreement with Blueprint Software Works for the inclusion of the 'eComStation Virtual File System' driver which provides support for Samba Client. Currently a GUI to configure it is lacking, but an example of how to mount a Samba resource is available.

REPORTING

To tell us your findings, please create a report at:
